D-tecture – digital detection of structural damage
Task and short description
After searching for an innovative technology, we should find a suitable field of application in which a problem is solved with this technology.
In our case we decided to use the LiDAR technology. In the further course of the project we came across the everyday work of an expert in the field of documentation of damages in or on buildings. We decided to modernize this high workload that usually includes a lot of paperwork.
LiDAR technology describes a camera that uses laser technology to create a 3D model. In addition, the laser can be used to measure time and distance. When scanning a room, a 3D floor plan with exact dimensions can be created. We combined this ability with machine learning, for damage detection. Here the machine is fed with measurement data and images to learn from the data, to detect structural damage such as mold, moisture, cracks or unevenness.
The current amount of work makes an expert very expensive. An expert can be commissioned by the city to analyse the houses in the surrounding of a new building project. The process happened one year before the start of construction and again one year after the end of the construction site. The city wants to make sure that it is not responsible for cracks or other serious damages that could have been caused by the construction.
Such a surveyor can also be done by private individuals or companies to inspect the building immediately after completion and to inspect it again 5 years after completion in order to make any warranty claims against the construction company.
A typical day often starts with an expert getting acquainted with the floor plan and current conditions. He then goes through all the rooms and records all the details and damages on a recording device. The results must be written down later on. Furthermore, the assistants measure the defects and take pictures of them. In order to document a house in this way, it often takes 12 - 15 hours on site - digitalization and processing are not included in this process.
In our concept the expert only needs a tablet which is equipped with a LiDAR camera, for example the new iPad Pro. With this the person walks through the room and damages are indicated directly with AR in the display. In addition, the expert can add new defects at any time to cover everything that cannot be detected by the technology. Many different features, such as the voice control with which notes can be added automatically and also be recorded in writing. This way the whole process is digitalized and saves time, which in turn lowers the price.
In order to illustrate our concept and our application we have created an animated film. In addition, we have designed a prototype of the application to ensure a presentation of the new working tool. Furthermore, we created a video showing the new working environment of an expert.
