a concept for circularity in food packaging for supermarkets and beyond.
sometimes we get so used to a situation that we forget how damaging it actually is. but as soon as you see it, you can’t look away. when we go shopping in the supermarkets we want vegetables, fruits and pastries. but we get plastics, aluminium and carton. what happens are tons of waste, ready for burning or landfill.
from this problem, the good food loop arose; a visionary concept for a sustainable use of food packaging. it is about eliminating the one way system established today and instead create a circular process of reuse on base of a standardized packaging.
the good food loop project has two important aspects, one regarding the design of the process of delivery, use and reuse and one regarding the packaging itself.
the process has been devided in two steps to enable a smooth change; the short term concept allows huge improvements while keeping the common way of shopping in supermarkets. the one way packaging of today is replaced by reusable boxes that are brought into a deposit machine after use. the longterm concept replaces our supermarkets by local stocks and the shopping is done via an an app and the wares are delivered in an optimised route.
this process places demands on the packaging. the complex system of requirements is realized in almost simple looking packagings. no useless materials, no useless decorations. the main form should be space efficient and ergonomic, should be standardized to create a 3d grid, stackable to make all transports and stocking effective and adaptable to many different kinds of groceries. the outcome is a box in a transparent material and an opaque lid both contemplated for reuse, and a one way sealing ring and paper label customizable for every brand. the box is armed with a unique qr-code that for every refill is connected with the packaging content, which then can be used to scan the price and all other relevant information.
at the end, the solution looks simple. unspectecular design for sustainble innovation. for everyone.
